Guest posting is one of the quickest ways to promote your company or new website. The way that guest posting works is pretty straightforward. You’ll write a post for someone’s blog or website on a topic that relates to the site. The post will include a link to your own website, book, or blog. The reason that guest posting is appealing is that it offers you a free or low-cost way to promote your company or cause. Before you write a guest post, though, there are a few things that you need to think about.
1. Not all bloggers accept guest posts
Always pitch the blogger before you write a post. A pitch is simply a brief email that introduces yourself and suggests a topic for the post. Your pitch should also include a link to your website or blog so the author knows what link you plan to use in the post. Keep in mind that not all bloggers accept guest posts on a regular basis, so you need to pitch before you spend your time writing. It would be terribly frustrating to write a post only to find out that the blogger won’t use it.
2. Find out if the blogger charges for posts
Most of the time, guest posts are free. You get a link to your website and the owner of the blog gets free content. Some bloggers, however, consider guest posting to be a form of advertising. Having too many links on their website can lower their Google Page Rank (PR) and negatively affect their blog ratings. Because of this, some bloggers charge a fee for guest posting. Before you start to work on your post, make sure you clarify whether or not the blogger will charge you for post placement. Keep in mind that even if the blogger does charge, these fees are usually negotiable. Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount, but don’t be rude about it.
3. Ask how long the link will remain on the blog
Most bloggers will keep your link up for a year. Sometimes this time length varies. Before you write a post for a blogger, make sure that you find out exactly how long your link will be up. If a blogger only plans to keep your post up for a few months, you may want to seek out other websites where your post will remain in place for a longer period of time.
4. Discover whether or not the blogger wants unique content
When it comes to posting, not all bloggers require unique content. Some bloggers are happy to use an article you’ve written that has been previously shared on another website. Before you assume that a blogger will accept a used post, however, you need to ask if they require original content. If a blogger will accept usage rights for an article, it means that you can save time by offering the same post to several different websites. If the bloggers that you’re working with require unique content, though, you’ll have to write a specialized post for each website you want your link placed on.
